This is the third solo CD from this Irishman who now resides in
Utrecht, Netherlands. Judging from his
photograph, Martin Hutchinson seems a real “broth of a
boy”! And he sings like he is one too, in his spectacularly
unadulterated Irish accent. Indeed, when you put the
whole thing together, I have to say that he gives one the impression of
someone who could start a fight in an empty room.
But don’t take that as hostile criticism. Seldom has a voice and persona better fitted the material.
All the songs are his, excepting the closing Big Bill Broonzy
number. Their common theme is “matters of the heart” in one case
LITERALLY, in “Dirty Rotten Traitor” my favourite track -
and Hutchinson gives the whole thing total commitment. You
might say he puts his HEART into it.
This is a bluesy, gutsy album. If you are
an aficionado of the “No Prisoners Taken Division” of the Folk Rock
movement, then this is the album for you. Lots of
attack from his vocals, and some gifted playing from some fine session
men, though none of their contributions trump Hutchinson’s splendid
electric guitar and dobro playing.
The lyrics all make sense, and occasionally rhyme. That said, I doubt if the songs will be covered by many other
performers. Why not? Are they somehow
lacking?
No, that is not the right question. The fact is that the
songs are personal to Hutchinson, and what is more, are all part of a
whole here. You see they lend themselves to his positive vocals, and provide the
perfect vehicle for the high quality session men to go to town on.
It is an album not to reflect on, so much as let your hair down to: the
album with which to celebrate the end of the working week, and thus
welcome the start of the weekend.
