“Dempsey Broughton” is of course Kevin Dempsey (guitar, vocals, bass and percussion) and Joe Broughton (violin, mandolin and percussion). This is their second album, building on the success of their first (“Every Other World”). And it helps consolidate their reputation: well-earned in Kevin’s case from his time with Whippersnapper and working with Mary Black; and in Joe’s case from his work in the Albion Band.

Top class musicianship and a very crisp production. Nice understated vocals from Kevin, and some very brave arrangements.   

Truth was however, whilst the instrumental tracks on this CD did work for me, most of the songs did not. I wanted slightly stronger songs. They started with the TNT of Alex Campbell’s memorable “So Long”, but had no dynamite to back it up with.  (Apologies to the great Henry Miller).

I am sure however that their solid fan base will appreciate this album; and I am equally certain that I will await their third CD with much anticipation.
