Arbor Therapy - Healing through Trees - The Breath Meditation
by J. Zimmerman, Ph.D.

What is Arbor Therapy? And what is a simple and healing spiritual meditation that can enable you to connect with the blessings that trees and forests give?

Arbor-therapy Meditation 1 (January 2002).

"I am grateful to the trees. I am nourished by the oxygen that they have released into the air.
I am grateful to the trees. May the air I am breathing out reach the trees, who replenish the air."

Arbor therapy and ecotherapy.

Arbor therapy is a healing, spiritual practice, which enables you to connect with the blessings that trees and forests give. It is a part of ecotherapy, which offers a bedrock to the healing of humanity and the Earth through increased spiritual connection between the two. Arbor therapy is a core component of ecotherapy. It is our privilege to bring you a new arbor-therapy meditation each month.

The Process of Meditation.

Sit in the presence of a tree or forest that you love.

Perhaps you are in the presence of a perfumed noble fir or a protective coast oak or your backyard apple tree. You may be in the presence of a photograph taken by yourself or a friend of the redwoods of the Avenue of the Giants. Or you may simply be holding a tree or a forest in your spirit.

Rest your hands on your knees. Close your eyes. Settle your body so that you are comfortable. Rest your feet flat on the ground. Lift the crown of your head upward, allowing your spine to lengthen. Take a few easy breaths.

Breathe in slowly and smoothly. As you do, say in your heart and your mind:
"I am grateful to the trees. I am nourished by the oxygen that they have released into the air."

When your lungs are full, pause for a second.

Then exhale slowly and smoothly. As you do, say in your heart and your mind:
"I am grateful to the trees. May the air I am breathing out reach the trees, who replenish the air."

Do this seven times:
