• Small tree or large shrub.
• Leaves: Hairy, elliptical, 4" long; 3" wide. Jagged margins.
• Female flower (with ovary): crimson; many thin, tenth-inch-long petals.
• Male flower (with stamens): catkins; up to 2" long.
• Fruit: Nut enclosed or cupped by leafy bracts.
