Scott is a docent for the Big Basin State Park. He enjoys educating people on the flowers and natural wonders of the redwood region, and leads walks in the Big Basin State Park.

He is also available as a guide for private custom walks for individuals that wish to pay for the privilege.

Upcoming walks led by Scott Peden

Free flower/plant walks at Big Basin Redwoods State Park:

• From Park HQ in Santa Cruz Mountains on Saturdays and Sundays;
• And at Ranch del Oso (near the ocean end of BBSP) on Sundays.

Here are walk dates for 2011. Walk with docent Scott Peden on the THIRD Saturday of each month. Two exceptions: not the third Saturday of May (which is the Semperviren's Fund Birthday party) and not the third Saturday of June]. Walk is 4 miles and hours, i.e. 1 m.p.h. A different walk is on the Sunday immediately after the THIRD Saturday of each month: 5 miles and hours. The above walks leave at 10 AM from Park HQ in Santa Cruz Mountains. Also walk with docent Scott Peden at Rancho del Oso (Big Basin S.P.) on the second Sunday of each month. Two walks, tentatively set at: 11 AM for the .8 mile loop at the Rancho del Oso nature center, for 1.5 hours; 1 PM at the Rancho del Oso Ranger's Station for the Alder Camp loop: 3 miles, for 3.5 hours. Also available: walk with docent David Auerbach on the SECOND Saturday of each month; meet at BBSP HQ in Santa Cruz Mountains.

• Meet at the Flag Pole by Park Headquarters. We leave at 10 A.M. both Saturday and Sunday.
• Have plenty of water, even in the winter.
• Bring lunch or plenty of snack food as we have a short stop for lunch each day.
• There is ALWAYS something in Bloom. My worst walk had one flower, and we still had hours of fun discussing Redwoods and many of the other Plants of the forest.
• Riparian forest on both days
  • Saturdays Walks: Slippery Rock environs and Sempervirens Water Fall.
  • Sundays walks: Views and Chaparral. Possibly a visit to an old blasting shed, where the dynamite was stored for the building of California's first scenic highway (Hwy 236 from Park H.Q. through Waterman's Gap headed for Saratoga summit).
• Saturday 4-hour 4-mile walk on Sequoia Trail, about a 400-ft gentle elevation climb.
• Sunday 5-hour 5-mile walk, about a 500-ft elevation climb with a slightly steeper ascent. Paved Road on Sunday.

  Winter walks, if cancelled by rain, will at least have a flower slide show in the Semperviren's room in the Headquarters building -- unless the park is closed due to extreme weather.

  These Saturday and Sunday walks are free.

  • See several ferns and flowers not found elsewhere in Big Basin.
  • See the Santa Cruz Mountains FOUR largest waterfalls.
